A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas: A Quirky Christmas Treasure

In our previous post we took a look at “Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration”, the main castle stage show at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. While we absolutely love that show, its not the only one at the party. Performed 5 times a night at the Rockettower Plaza Stage, “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas”  is a completely over the top, yet totally underrated gem.

The show is hosted by the super enthusiastic “Haley Comet” (get it?) and features a cast of background dancers and some (favorite?) Tomorrowland characters. The only real story line is that Tomorrowland is having a Christmas party and they need Stitch to find Santa Claus for it.

I know many of you are probably scarred when it comes to Stitch because of his awful attraction, however I enjoy him for the most part in the Lilo and Stitch film. Here, he is straight up lovable. His struggling to understand Christmas, and especially Santa, lead to some genuinely funny moments.

The other party attendees are Buzz Lightyear and Mike Wazowski. Each gets their own big musical number, both of which are completely silly and extremely entertaining. Its really hard to put the quirkiness of this show into words so I am going to try and let the photos do the taking for the most part.

After a bit of a background story, the show begins with a rocking version of “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”, sung by Ms Comet.

There is no shortage of sick dance moves in this show as you can see above.

Next, its time for Buzz’s big number.

Buzz sings (or perhaps more accurately talks to music) a version of Jingle Bells in which he is battling his arch nemesis Zurg on Christmas day. Everything is going just dandy for the space ranger….

Until Zurg’s crew shows up! These guys are seriously the best! From their ridiculous outfits (anklet bells and all), to their even more ridiculous dance moves, these guys are amazing.

If I am ever lucky enough to become a rich man, the first thing I am doing is hiring these 4 guys (outfits, dance moves and all) to follow me around and be my bodyguards.

Buzz and his lady friends are not loving these guys. Needless to say, there is only one way to settle this dispute of the galaxy.

dance off bro

Yes, a dance off of epic proportions is about to go down.

In the end, Zurg realized he was being a bit of a jerk by waging a dance war during the holidays and stands down. He even wishes Buzz a Merry Christmas.

This makes Buzz happy.

Haley then returns to have another entertaining conversation with Stitch. DSC00853

She tries to explain who Santa is to Stitch, but all she seems to get across is that Santa spies on little kids, breaks into houses and punishes anyone who he doesn’t think was nice enough. This leads Stitch to declare that Santa sounds like a snitch to him and renews his determination to find him, for a less jolly reason this time.

This has Haley a bit worried… She quickly brushes it off though and introduces Mike Wazowski to the stage for his big number.

I Mike Wazowski character outfit always seems a bit creepy to me, but I suppose that’s fitting since he is a monster after all. The body is solid and the long arms are stiff, which leads to some awkward movements. I also always feel kind of bad for the performer as the suit looks pretty heavy and is required to be played by somebody of a smaller size.

Mike performs a rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” where he yells out all the one liners from the popular alternate version of the song kids sing (like a lightbulb, like a flashlight, etc…). It’s super corny but it works thanks to some dedicated performances from his background dancers.

Look at the faces of some of these dancers and try not to smile.

The 2nd verse stops to a jazz cymbal in between each line of the song so Mike can deliver a bunch of “intentionally” terrible jokes. Again, it works thanks to the ensemble who elevate a bunch of corny puns into a full fledged lounge number.

Big finish and all!

DSC00880

Its now time for the big finale but Stitch is sad because Santa gave him the slip. This is after Haley stopped Stitch from firing a rocket at Santa’s sleigh… you know Christmas as usual!

Haley is finally able to properly describe to Stitch what Christmas is all about when she mentions that its about family which is something near and dear to him (Ohana).

Stitch concludes he was wrong about Santa. However, since the real Santa got away he decides that he will step in for Jolly Old Saint Nick at the party.

In the end the party was a huge success and good times were had by all!

In conclusion, we love this show. As I’ve stated, its completely corny and over the top, but that’s what makes it so much fun. Its quirky and unique which makes it extremely memorable.

Its also very easy to see. There is always plenty of room in the Plaza to view the show as it rarely plays to a crowd larger than 50 or so people. We think that’s a shame really and strongly recommend checking it out if you are attending the Christmas party.

As a side note, the show also shares a stage with the A Capella group Edge Effect.

They are a group of talented singers and are worth checking out as well.

DSC00796DSC00798DSC00799

They alternate performances with A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas, so its easy to check out both around the same time.

This just about wraps up our coverage of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas party for this year. We will be back soon with a look at Epcot’s Festival of the Holidays, as well as the Christmas scene over at Hollywood Studios.

Bye for now!
